Changing Seasons: Prepping your Classic Car for Autumn

Changing Seasons: Prepping Your Classic Car for Autumn

As the kids head back to school, the nights grow longer, and grey clouds start to fill the sky, it’s clear that autumn has arrived. Is your classic car ready for the change in seasons? Don’t worry. We’ve put together a handy guide to help you prepare your beloved vehicle for the cooler, wetter months ahead. Here’s some of what you should pay particular attention to:

Tyres

With wetter roads and potentially slippery conditions, it’s crucial to check the tread depth and overall condition of your tyres. Ensure they have sufficient grip and are properly inflated to handle the unpredictable autumn weather.

Brakes

Just as we mentioned with the tyres, the wetter, more slippery roads of autumn mean your classic car will need a greater stopping distance and a bit more care compared to its modern counterparts. Keep in mind that your classic might not have the advanced braking systems found in newer vehicles, so it’s important to drive with extra caution. Your classic car deserves that extra bit of sympathy to keep both you and your cherished vehicle safe on the road.

Battery

The chill of autumn can be tough on car batteries, especially for classic cars. To avoid unexpected stalls or starting issues, it’s wise to check your battery’s voltage and charge as the temperature drops. If your vintage beauty won’t be hitting the road frequently, consider disconnecting the battery to preserve its life or use a trickle charger to keep it maintained while it’s parked.

Fluids

As the temperatures drop, make sure your car’s fluids are topped up and in good condition. This includes engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Check for any signs of leaks.  Consider allowing your car a little more sympathy as the chill sets in to allow lubricants to cycle around in your engine before setting off.

Lights

With shorter days and longer nights, your car’s lighting system becomes even more critical. Inspect all exterior and interior lights, including headlights, tail lights, indicators, and brake lights. Replace any bulbs that are dimming or burnt out, and ensure your lights are clean and free of any obstructions.

Bodywork

Autumn’s wet and windy weather can take a toll on your car’s bodywork. Give your classic car a thorough wash and wax to protect the paint from moisture and road debris. Pay close attention to areas prone to rust and consider applying a rust inhibitor to vulnerable spots. Regularly cleaning and checking your car’s undercarriage can also prevent corrosion as the season progresses.

With a little help from Pitt Lane Classic Car Restoration, your car will be ready to face the challenges of autumn and allow you to enjoy the last of the great driving days.

Is your car ready for Summer?

Get your car ready for the summer holiday season

As the summer sun begins to shine again (despite all the rain), it’s the perfect time for open-road adventures! Ensure your classic car is in prime condition so that only the weather can hold you back this summer. Don’t let minor issues spoil your drives, trust the experts at Pitt Lane Classic Car Restoration to get your classic car holiday-ready. It’s inevitable that some things might not go as planned. Breakdowns and wear and tear are part of the classic car experience. However, there are steps you can take to minimize these risks.

What CAn YOu DO TO Help?

Help your car out where you can, within your mechanical capabilities. It might seem cliché or obvious, but it’s crucial to:

  • Check Fluid Levels: Ensure your oil, coolant, and brake fluid are at proper levels. Lack of lubrication on moving parts is a major cause of vehicle issues.
  • Inspect Rubber Components: Long periods of storage or inactivity can cause rubber to dry rot, develop flat spots, or harden. This applies to your tyres and all the rubber bushes and seals holding your car together.
  • Check Tyre Pressures: Proper tyre pressure helps avoid mishaps on the road.
  • Check your Electrics: Make sure your battery holds a charge and that essential electrics like lights, horn, and windshield wipers are functioning properly.
  • Fresh Fuel: Fuel goes stale a lot quicker than you think, usually a couple of months. This step is particularly important for those with a carburettor vs fuel injection. In our experience we have found that it is often stale fuel that causes cars to run poorly, especially after periods of not driving it.

Many of these checks are covered annually during an MOT or standard vehicle service. However, some classic cars are old enough to be exempt from the MOT. Regardless, these checks should ideally be performed every time you drive your classic car. While it might seem unrealistic, making a conscious effort now and then goes a long way in keeping your vehicle roadworthy.

Essential Kit List

We recommend keeping the following essentials in your car:

  • Spare Engine Oil (most classics take a 20w50 classic  motor oil, but if in doubt give us a ring and we can help you out)
  • Spare Coolant (or even just some water)
  • Fire Extinguisher
  • Spare set of Spark Plugs

Gordon-Keeble Owners Club Morning

June 22, 2024On a bright and breezy Saturday morning, Pitt Lane played host to the Gordon-Keeble Owners Club as they celebrated the 60th anniversary of this unique car. This special event marked six decades since the manufacture began in 1964.

Manufactured at Eastleigh Aerodrome, what is now Southampton Airport, the Gordon-Keeble is a rare gem with only 99 ever made. 22 of the remaining 70 classic cars still on the road made their way to Pitt Lane for the event, offering a rare opportunity to see a significant portion of the surviving models in one place. Known for its impressive top speed of 140 mph, thanks to its Chevrolet 5.3-liter V8 engine, the Gordon Keeble was said to be the fastest four-seater in the world during its time.

One of the highlights of the day was watching the convoy of these magnificent cars arrive. The procession had journeyed to Pitt Lane from their hotel the night before, taking the fabled test route that Jim Keeble himself used to test drive the cars through rural Hampshire. This scenic route, steeped in history, provided the perfect backdrop for the arrival of the convoy.

Once parked up and settled, attendees were welcomed with a selection of tea, coffee, and cake, fostering a warm and friendly atmosphere. The morning was spent exploring the Pitt Lane workshop and Michael’s showroom, where the cars were admired and their histories discussed in detail. The shared passion for the Gordon Keeble was evident as stories of restoration and ownership were exchanged among the enthusiasts.

As the event drew to a close, the Gordon Keeble Owners Club bid farewell to Pitt Lane, but their celebrations were far from over. The club members continued their anniversary festivities throughout the weekend, with more events and activities planned.

We at Pitt Lane want to thank to Gordon Keeble Owners Club for allowing us to join them in their celebrations to honour the legacy of this remarkable vehicle.

For more information on the Gordon-Keeble check out the links at the bottom of this article, you may even spot Michael in the Youtube video!
